Respecting human rights/human resource developmentRespecting human rightsAt Tokai Carbon, we believe that consideration for human rights is important in order to realize our corporate philosophy of “Ties of Reliability.”Tokai Carbon supports the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the global standard for respecting and ensuring human rights and freedoms. We conduct business activities with a high sense of ethics based on the Guiding Principles for Business and Human Rights. And, recognizing the need to pay special attention to the human rights of children, we support the Children’s Rights and Business Principles, respect the rights of children in our business activities, and undertake social contribution activities that promote children’s rights. In order to instill these attitudes and our basic policy on respect for human rights within the company, the Tokai Carbon Group Human Rights Promotion Committee in particular is working to thoroughly inform our employees and raise their awareness.Human rights awareness initiativesTokai Carbon conducts group-wide and division-specific training to instill awareness of human rights in its employees. Training focuses on reinforcing understanding of the Company’s Basic Policies on Respecting Human Rights. In doing so, it uses present-day examples, including ones addressing discrimination, harassment, violations of the rights of people with disabilities, and violations of the rights of people from other countries.Human rights training is conducted for employees who have been newly hired or promoted to management. Particularly when promoted to management, they are educated on human rights issues such as bullying and harassment, including incident numbers and examples of measures taken in each case. In 2019, human rights training was conducted for 612 employees at Tokai Carbon and 340 employees at group companies in Japan.Based on our awareness that human rights are the foundation of CSR, we have joined human rights organizations for businesses in Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya. We use our memberships in these organizations to share information on and expand our understanding of human rights to ensure that respect for human rights remains a key aspect of our corporate culture. In 2019, there were no cases of critical human rights violations at Tokai Carbon. We will continue to educate our employees to prevent human rights violations in future. If it is suspected that a human rights violation may have occurred, the Human Resources Department will conduct an investigation carefully so that the whistleblower is not disadvantaged, and will consider penalties for what has been confirmed as fact in accordance with internal rules. Furthermore, we will strongly remind employees via human rights training etc. in order to prevent recurrence.Evaluations, compensation, and human resource developmentIn line with our long-term vision of being “A Global Carbon company Contributing to a Better Society,” Tokai Carbon devotes significant attention to human resource development as a way to heighten internationalism and our ability to create value – two of the themes of our basic philosophy. We aim to further strengthen the capabilities of our employees and improve our value creation capabilities as an organization. We clearly define the roles and objectives for individual employees and, to promote career development, we have established systems for attaining professional qualifications, managing objectives, and self-assessment.Promoting diversityContinuous employment systemWe have established a re-employment system that enables motivated and skilled elderly workers to continue their employment for five continuous years after the mandatory retirement age. In 2019, we continued the employment of all 26 people who requested to stay on. In addition, we revised our compensation system to increase pay for re-employed workers and include them in the same personnel evaluation system used for regular employees. Moving forward, we will continue to consider policies to promote our ability to reliably secure human resources and encourage greater use of our re-employment system.Opportunities for womenIn 2018, Tokai Carbon formulated an action plan for promoting the careers of women. Under this plan, our goals over the two-year period beginning April 2018 and extending to March 2020 are to increase the hiring of female new graduates to at least 30% of people taken on for career-track positions and to foster a workplace environment that encourages women to continue working even after giving birth and as they proceed to raise their families. As for our performance, we increased our hiring of female new graduates to 29% of the total, just short of our goal. Looking to the future, we will continue with efforts to meet the goals described above.Expanding hiring of people with disabilitiesAs of June 1, 2019, people with disabilities made up 1.93% of Tokai Carbon’s workforce. This figure is lower than the legally mandated rate, which we are actively working to achieve by creating working environments where people with disabilities can succeed.37Vision and StrategyBusiness ReportData SectionTOKAI CARBON ANNUAL REPORT 2019Sustainability Report
