Effective from January 1, 2006, Tokai Carbon will increase the price of specialty carbon/graphite products by 20% for recovery of profitability. With the surging prices of the core raw materials pitch cokes and binder pitch in the background, last year and this year Tokai Carbon has twice carried out price increase to counter the profit downturn caused by long years of slumping sales price as well as for securing production capacity to cater for the worldwide high demand of graphite. However, in addition to the continual increase of core raw material prices, surging fuel costs and growing requirement for larger graphite material have become the unavoidable cause of sharp rise in our production cost. Price recovery actions taken twice in the past have not been adequate, and profit level of the relevant graphite business has not recovered. Moreover, lead by various growing markets and segments, graphite demand is expected to stay at a high level in continuation to this year, drawing concerns of further difficulty in graphite supply on a worldwide basis next year. Under such difficult circumstances, Tokai Carbon has decided to request a price increase in an effort to stabilize supply to our customers in and out of Japan as well as for continuation of our graphite business by improving profitability. In this sequence of price increase, we will raise the price of all products as has been done before, while simultaneously putting an emphasis on profitability improvement of low-profit business segments.
